Tom graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1990 with a trial practice commendation, and was an appellate law clerk. He initially worked for a large international firm (Graham & James), and has been a federal and state court litigator for twenty-five years. He has handled a wide variety of cases, primarily defending ocean carriers, marine terminals, intermodal container chassis lessors, motor carriers, freight forwarders, warehouses, related companies, and their insurers in personal injury/fatality cases in California and throughout the United States. He has won a number of appellate cases with significant published decisions.
For the past ten years Tom has acted as national counsel in trucking personal injury/fatality accidents and cases for one of the largest ocean carriers, and has lectured as a national expert on intermodal trucking contract and insurance issues. He routinely assists clients in pursuing their rights as additional insureds and in pursuing contractual defense and indemnity rights, and has provided coverage advice to and acted as coverage counsel for some of the largest insurers.
Tom also has substantial experience representing clients in general maritime matters, cargo damage/loss cases, freight charge collection, bond recovery, premises and equipment lease disputes, petitions for the remission and mitigation of U.S. Customs penalties, and liability risk management (comprehensive entity, contract, procedure, and insurance structuring to reduce liability risks).
A devoted husband and father of three children, Tom is also an avid composer, pianist, skier, and hiker, among other interests.
